A Superbly Rare Solid Gold First World War Vintage "Sweetheart" Bar Brooch or Pin, for the Famous British 63rd Royal Naval Division, in 9 Carat Gold and Enamels You are bidding on a superbly rare solid gold Great War vintage British Royal Navy lapel pin or "Sweetheart" Brooch for the famous 63rd Royal Naval Division. SWEETHEART BROOCHES TO THE RND BATTALIONS... ANSON, DRAKE, HAWKE, HOOD, HOWE AND NELSON ARE RARE - ONE TO THE ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION PER SE AND IN SOLID GOLD IS EXCESSIVELY SO. The Royal Naval Division was formed at the beginning of World War One as the inspiration of Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty. It was originally composed of naval reservists surplus to the requirements of the Fleet, and first served in the defence of Antwerp, then saw distinguished service in the Gallipoli campaign, and later was a "crack" division in the long years of trench warfare in France and Flanders. Because the Division was disbanded after the war, few RND Sweetheart brooches were made and fewer survive. This is a bar brooch with a fouled anchor, finely formed and crowned, with a scroll below with "ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION". This is executed in 9carat solid gold with blue and red hard vitreous enamel. The pin is marked on the reverse "9 Ct" as shown in the photograph above. This pin is just over two inches long and one read more
