Hector Rascon "St. Francis Praying" 10.75" high X 5.75" wide X 3.25" deep This is a charming St. Francis that Hector carved for our gallery, Lark Art, in Sedona, AZ. It is joined by two of Hector's praying angels that measure 9.75" high X 6.5" wide X 1.25" deep.While the world searches feverishly for silver and gold, Hector Rascon finds his treasure in the broken branch of a cottonwood tree. Gathering the branches that have fallen along the banks of the Rio Grande, Hector begins the process that will result in his heart-warming saints and animals.A gifted New Mexico carver, Hector learned the basic techniques from his father-in-law, Ben Ortega, many years ago. During his days with Ortega, Hector carved mostly Santos. In 1977, he set up his own studio and began carving saints and animals in his own style. Now, over 30 years later, his carvings continue to evolve and enchant.Hector is well-known for his giraffe, burro, armadillo, rabbit, coyote, buffalo, cat, pig, rooster, saint and angel carvings. He carves the pieces from cottonwood and aspen using a chain saw, eight very sharp chisels, and a band saw. He then paints the animals and adds hair for manes and whiskers and ropes for tails. His carvings wear incredibly sensitive, soulful faces. . . and they reflect his spirit in their eyes.This inspired carving reminds us of the words
