Here is a really cool item for your bidding consideration. Well here is a story that will explain my correspondence with the man himself, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, the creator of Rat Fink, numerous custom cars, model kits and a pioneer in a whole cultural movement back in the late 50's all the way until current day. This set of Roth art and correspondence is probably one of the nicest and rarest of Roth stuff I've seen on here for quite some time. I hope I don't bore you with this, but there was no bigger fan of "Big Daddy" himself than I was and still am. I will explain the letters in sequence with the pictures. The first picture of course is the envelope Ed used to send me a picture of Rat Fink eating spaghetti, this was drawn in March of 1992. The second picture is Rat Fink eating provolone cheese and drinking olive oil, this was drawn in April 1992. The story behind those 2 drawings is when I was talking with Ed back then, he had told me he had just gone through a divorce and was having a little bit of a rough time. I have some friends in Philadelphia, PA that have a huge Italian specialty foods store and I used to send Ed all this Italian product that I would have freeze wrapped so he could try it. I sent this to him because I was such a fan, I couldn't believe that we were even talking. I know it might not be a big deal to everyone, but for me, who better than to talk to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth? Well unknowingly, in return Ed sent me back drawings of Rat Fink eating spaghetti, drinking olive oil and eating cheese. How cool was that? The next letter / drawing you see was from August 1992 and it's Rat Fink holding one of his new designs and Ed was explaining to me who his ex wife ran away with, a 30th anniversary shirt coming out and a RF party in Frisco. He also had brought and original Rat Fink surfers helmet for me to New England, but I couldn't make it at the time. He did eventually give me that helmet and it was from his catalog back in the 60's. You can also see on the back of the envelope that Ed had written to me if I send a sase, it would mean a quicker response. Sorry, I no longer have it. The next two letters were from April and May of 1990 and that's when I first contacted Ed by the phone and he asked me to write, so I did and he answered the letters and autographed the backs of them. I'm not going to say I was a personal friend of his because that wouldn't be true, I was just a fan who Ed made some time for and replied with some very cool drawings and made a grown man act like a kid when finally meeting him in the later 90's. I handed Ed a certain type of spaghetti that I used to send him and when I did, he said "Daryl, it's nice to finally meet you". I talked with him through out the night. I remember that there were some really big airbrush paintings that Von Franco had done and they were different close ups of HD motors, gears, etc and Ed had painted a Rat Fink on each and every one of them. I wish I had the money back then to buy them all, because I certainly would have. He was the guest of honor at the grand opening of House Industries here in Wilm., DE. Ed had partnered with the owners of House Industries and they did a few ventures together. House Industries created the Ed "Big Daddy" Roth fonts and they did the t-shirts in the Roth box art and in the Roth paint cans and probably other things that I can't remember. It's now time to pass this incredible and rare collection of art work and correspondence to hopefully a new owner. Thanks for listening to my story, it always brings a smile to my face and fond memories of talking with and finally meeting the man himself!
