You are bidding on the second of several ready-to-run American Flyer sets I am in the process of assembling from the Gilbert Era (1940s to 1960s) using the various engines, cars, etc., I currently have on hand. I am offering these sets with no track; instead, I offer a selection of different track configurations for you to choose from. The winner of this auction can choose one of the following track configurations and I will add it to the invoice.

A simple loop of track with 12 curves and 2 straights for $10.00. It can be seen in the pictures of Starter Set #1418 below.

A larger loop with 12 curves and 6 straights, a good size to go around a small Christmas Tree, for $16.00.

A figure-8 with 18 curves, 4 straights, 4 half-straights, and a #725 crossover for $25.00.

Or you can specify what you want and we'll negotiate a price for it.

NOT E: I used a m irror in the pictures t o show both sides of the engine and each car; you are bidding on one engine and five cars, not ten.
Knowing that kids love to put things in train cars and give them a ride, I created this first set with a hopper and two gondolas, in addition to a steam engine, caboose and a #704 manual uncoupler (see first picture). The engine and all five cars originally had link couplers but they have been converted to knuckle couplers by earlier owners . To minimize the cost of the set, I chose very common cars that are in less than perfect condition; you might say they reflect what you might find in a real rail yard! A kitbasher would have fun repainting and refining them. The first picture shows the set on the larger loop that I offer for $18.00. There is variation from one item to another, but overall the set is in C-5 Good Condition. The TM Guide book value of the set (without track), adjusted for condition, is $76.50.

The 282 Chicago NorthWestern (CNW) Lines Steam Locomotive is in strong TCA C-6 (Very Good) to weak C-7 condition, but one side of its tender is badly scratched up as you can see in the picture. It runs both forward and reverse, but demands more power from the transformer than I think it should. I cleaned the brushes, commutator, and reversing switch, and replaced its lower fingers. The reverse unit is more reliable than most, but does stick occasionally. The choo-choo sound is terrific and the smoke unit works great. The headlight works but for some reason is barely visible from the front. $40

629 unpainted red Stock Car on diecast frame in C-4 (Fair) condition; the catwalk ends, 3 corners, and one end are chipped; one door latch is missing. The brake wheel is present. $2.50

#640 painted gray American Flyer Hopper in C-5 condition. Half of one step is broken off. There is a little rust on the trucks. There is some tape residue on one side, a couple of scratches, and scattered tiny spots of paint loss on the edges. $12.00

The two 631 Texas & Pacific (T&P) gondolas in TCA C-4 (Fair) condition. On one, the l ettering is strong, but all steps have been broken off and there's a chip out of the bottom of one side. On the other, the lettering is almost totally gone but only one step is missing. $1.50 each.
#630 unpainted red Caboose in TCA C-4 (Fair) condition; c upola roof and one side cracked; the useless rear coupler, one step, and light socket missing; there are no pins to hold the body to the chassis. $1.00
The set is powered by a #4B 100 Watt Transformer in TCA C-6 condition. The cord is nice and suple with no cracks. I tested it with the 282 engine pulling all five cars and it worked fine. $15.00. A #690 Track Terminal and hook-up wires are included. $2.00
#704 manual uncoupler in near C-7 condition. $1.00
