You are bidding on a genuine antique. It was bought in Bavaria, Germany in the early 50's. The purchasers were told it came from a castle in the area. However the inscription at the top of the coate of arms is "CH ZW" which suggests to me that it did, in fact, come from Switzerland. It is large and heavy, measuring 22 1/2" square and is nearly 1/2" thick. It weighs close to 60lbs. The coate of arms has 4 interesting figures, topped by a crown and orb. The date on the bottom is 1777. The cast iron is in really good condition with very slight corrosion on the design. T are two "creases" in the metal w it was pressed into the mold. The fire place cover would have been hung in front of the large hearth. It would absorb the heat of the fire and continue to radiate warmth even if thew fire began to die down. The fittings which hang it are original but the chain is not. Insurance recommended. This is really unique. You can own a piece of history.
