GEORGIAN ROSE CUT CROWNED HEART RING This is an absolutely amazing ring. I purchased it on eBay from a reputable dealer about 2 years ago for well over $2000. It is a rose cut Georgian ring, with an actual diamond cut as a heart shape with the three crowning diamonds. The large diamond is 1cm tall by 7mm wide and is at least a carat. It is a beautiful clear color - not at all yellow. It is over 200 years old and is set in the old style, with a silver face and gold band. These rings were all hand made and the diamonds all hand cut, so no two are alike. I have never seen another with a heart rose cut though. The band is beautifully decorated with a leafy design and scrolls. It is an American size 6 1/2. INFORMATION ABOUT ANTIQUE JEWELRY / JEWELLERY: Modern Art Deco The Art Deco movement introduced styles that often focused on bold colors and geometric shapes. Technology was emerging, and Art Deco was part of the new 'modern' look. Bakelite was patented in 1909. In the 1920's jewelry designers discovered that its light weight and bright colors made it a good choice for pins, bracelets, earrings, and other jewelry. Art Nouveau Art Nouveau styles became popular during the last decade of the 19 th century. Asymmetrical lines and elaborate ornamentation were key Art Nouveau elements, and designs often depicted flowers and plants, the female form, and flowing hair. Victorian Period 1837-1900 When the Georgian period ended in 1830, the Victorian period began with the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837. Two words that describe this time period are quantity and variety, which help to define the 19th century. Processes were developed to mass-produce jewelry, such as the stamping of gold settings. During the Victorian period, from about 1860 to 1880, mourning jewelry was the height of fashion and black was a stylish color. Mourning Jewelry (1600-1900) Black was the color of mourning, and Whitby jet, gutta percha and molded horn were fashioned into socially accepted mourning jewelry. Black enameling was a frequent element, as well as seed pearls accents denoting tears. Valued among collectors are engraved pieces, especially if dated. As with all jewelry, condition is important. Whitby Jet Whitby Jet was undoubtedly one of the earliest gemstones used to create artifacts and items of jewelry. It is thought that the first Jet workshops opened in Whitby about 1808. The industry reached a height of popularity in the UK in the late 19th Century due to the Victorian custom of mourning. When Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria wore jet jewelry as part of her mourning dress for several years. Always keep Jet separate from other jewelry since it is relatively soft and can easily be scratched. Georgian Period 1714-1830 Georgian jewelry refers to jewelry made during the years when the four King Georges ruled Great Britain. Georgian jewelry encompassed most of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Most pieces were encrusted with gemstones, and the type of metal used to create pieces was of secondary importance. Diamond were hand cut and set in silver with a closed back for greater "sparkle." Jacobite/Stuart Crystals This type of jewelry was in fashion after the execution of Charles I in 1649. The history of Stuart Crystals is a long one with their beginning during times of the Jacobites and the death of Charles I by execution. They were sentimental and memorial tokens of loved ones dating to the 17th century. They span from about 1649 to the mid 18th Century and are Pre-Georgian jewelry.
