The first is Le Dragon Rouge, ou l'Art de Commander les Esprits célestes, aériens et infernaux and makes no claim to antiquity on its title page. With the Blocquel imprint this edition dates from the early 1840's. The second principal edition, offered , is titled Le Véritable Dragon Rouge, plus la Poule Noire, edition augmentée des secrets de la Reine Cleopâtre &tc. and claims to be a reprint of the 1521 edition. More commonly found in occult collections, it dates from the 1890's. The True Red Dragon divides with the Grimoire of Honorius the darksome honour of an intelligible and unmutilated Ritual of Black Magic. It is also an exceedingly curious work, as it is the only published method of making pacts with the Devil. The first part deals with the preparation of the operator or Karcist, as he is called, together with the manner for creating the Blasting Rod, sort of a cattle prod for evil spirits. After this preparation is found the manner for calling all sorts of Spirit, including Lucifer himself, into visible appearance. The second part of the work, entitled Sanctum Regnum of the Clavicle or the Veritable Manner of Making Pacts contains a detailed outline for making a pact with Lucifuge Rofocale, the demon in charge of Hell's hierarchy by order of Lucifer. This is followed by a process in Necromancy called The Great Magical Art, or the Secret of Speaking with the Dead. Neither of these processes should be thought of lightly, or undertaken by those with little or no experience. You have been warned! The Grand Grimoire The True Red Dragon, for the most part, is identical to another, better known grimoire, called The Grand Grimoire. In his Book of Black Magic and Pacts, renowned occult Arthur Edward Waite has this to say: "The Grand Grimoire [or Red Dragon] is the most fantastic of [the Black Magick Grimoires] and is introduced with great pomp by its editor, Antonio Venitiana del Rabina, a personage whose name indicates the Italian origin of the work. By reason of its rarity and the great request in which it is, we are informed that it must be regarded as the veritable Magnum ...
