Applying modern techniques to an ancient craft that flourished in Damascus many centuries ago, Reed & Barton created an entirely new art medium in silverware through the combination of various metals. The natural affinity of copper, bronze and silver, the queen of metals, reaches new artistic heights with the subtle blending of their soft harmonious colors in three dimensional effects . Each piece of Reed & Barton Damascene is achieved by the painstaking etching and depositing of layers of one metal on another. The entire damascene process is done completely by hand, and involves more than 20 exacting, carefully timed operations, each performed by skilled Reed & Barton craftsmen working together in highly specialized and separate studios.
