We are proud to offer for your consideration this Reed & Barton, Victorian period, Neo-Grec design, silverplate hot water kettle. It stands upon three figural legs that have lion masks and paws. The depictions are very detailed, note the fur that sweeps down the legs and the claws on the paws. The tripod stance allows one to tilt the kettle forward on the two front legs in order to pour from the spout. The finial ball is also supported with three lion legs. The handle and spout are geometric and the body is a perfect sp The lid and body have hand chased decoration. It retains its original burner and comes with extra wicks. Condition is excellent, no loss of silver plate, no corrosion or deep scratches. T are two teensy dents on the burner, probably dropped while still hot. It is marked with the model number 2200 and the number 6, the Reed & Barton name has been obliterated, this was sometimes done by retailers at the time this was originally sold. Reed & Barton's model numbers in the 2000 series date to the early 1860's. T is no doubt that this kettle was made by Reed & Barton, they originated this lion pattern during this period. The pattern was very popular and was copied by other silver makers once the original patent had run out, but the later examples do not have the fineness of detail that is so evident in this example. It stands 12 1/2" tall and has a maximum diameter of just under 6". If you collect this lion pattern, this rare example of a hot water kettle is a must have.
