In the early 1990's, Nelson-Guild Productions released a series of Heritage Video tapes featuring the 8mm movies of Binghamton area railfan Dave Deyo. Now, nearly 16 years since they were last available, this footage has been DIGITALLY remastered and reedited for release on DVD-R. This video features the beloved Wellsville, Addison & Galeton shortline railroad which ceased operations in November 1979. The entire railroad was removed in 1980. This video features both of the W.A.G.'s F-units in operation, along with the only known footage of ex-Ford center cab #1700. Over a period of several months Dave made the pilgrimage to Galeton and filmed the last days of the WAG, including riding in the cab of the F units and the cupola of one of the WAG's cabooses. All footage was shot with 8mm color film WITH sound and has been DIGITALLY remastered and professionally edited with the ORIGINAL sound. You will not believe the sharpness and clarity of this transfer. The video has no narration, and it is sub-titled. I was always cautious to call it "a passive obsession", but in all honesty, it's much more than that. I admit, I was truly lucky to have been able to witness it's operations, from center cabs then to F-units, back in my college days, and then several years after that, get a chance to ride with, get to know the crew and staff, examine it's operations, and enjoy the beautiful mountain country the WA&G RR was located in. I miss it ..., and as the time passes, the finer minute details soften some, and recollection becomes more difficult. It is good we have photos and slides of this past event. It is good too, we have recorded sound, to add another dimension of remembering this past. And right now, it is great that these accomplishments from the past can be brought forward to today's standards that deliver a "newness" which can truly excite and amaze. I am talking about a new DVD just released tilted, "Remembering the Wellsville Addison and Galeton", which I received by post several days ago. The WAG existed from the mid 50s to the late 70s. At that time, the regular guy wanting to preserve the era in movies, was very limited. It was the 8mm movie camera and later on, the improved Super8 mm, with a larger picture frame in the same size 8mm film. Then finally, for some who chose it, was Super8 mm movies with sound. During these years, VHS recorders of a type were only seen or heard of in television stations. This "new" DVD is based on the same footage used to produce the VHS film of the WAG in the early 90's, but, mark my words, t are NO similarities. To my knowledge, Dave Deyo's original video produced in 1992, was the only commercially released movie ever available about the WA&G RR. A note about the old WAG video : The previous WAG production suffered from poor video fidelity, fuzzy sound, and contrasty bleeding colors. For those reasons, the reviews of that VHS production were not very good, even though the video content was excellent. Most are kind of hard to watch and in places, tough to listen to. Even though that was a long time ago, we WAG fans have had to put up with that for many years. This all changes today. Working with today's technology, Dave had his movie re-mastered, re-enhanced, and then involved his friend Sam Botts, who also helped in re-mastering and re-editing, and is involved with his own business producing and selling DVDs.
