In 1335 the Italian Guglielmo Zelandino designed and built the first mechanical clock. He applied to his model and escape wheel (verge escapement) invented by the French architect Villard de Honnecourt. The escape wheel regulates the isochronic movement of the balance that acts as a pendulum.Zelandino's clock was first placed in the tower of the church of St. Gottardo in Milan, Italy.
