p47-005 Republic P-47 Thunderbolt 8 x 10 Photograph on Fujifilm Paper A United States Army Air Forces Republic Aviation Corporation P-47 Thunderbolt (serial number 42-8039) sits on the flightline. The P-47, affectionately know by its pilots as the JUG, was the largest, most destructive single engine aircraft of World War II. The extremely heavy multi-role fighter excelled in close ground support operations as well as aerial combat. The 2,000 horsepower fighter was armed with eight Browning .50 caliber wing mounted machine guns and carried over 2,000 lbs of bombs, rockets, and other ordinance. The P-47 quickly gained a reputation for ruggedness. Its sturdy construction and air-cooled radial engine enabled the Thunderbolt to absorb severe battle damage and keep flying. First flown on May 6th, 1941, eventually 15,683 Thunderbolts were built. During the P-47's service in World War II it was credited with destroying 160,000 enemy vehicles, 11,874 enemy aircraft, and 9,000 enemy trains.
