I don't know which part of this piece to be more excited about. The original Revolutionary War Officer's Map tools, (signed ivory ruler, fold up steel map calipers) or the great original leather covered miniature box with original leather covered brass hinges, brass spring lock and original dark blue silk interior. YOU DECIDE!! This is one of the BEST 18th Century Leather Covered Boxes. Pine completely covered in a dark maroon almost black colored leather, circa 1760-1780. This incredible piece is ALL ORIGINAL, IT STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL WHITE METAL initial plate, the original brass hinges covered by leather and the original deep blue silk interior. As for the tools. The first is a wonderful steel fold up map calipers, in perfect untouched condition. The second is the original carved ivory ruler which is divided into inches, feet and yards. Oh, by the way, the ruler is signed, DAVIS & SON DERBY. The only thing I could find out on them was they were a map and map tool maker in Derby, England from the late 17th century until the mid 19th century. This is an incredibly RARE piece of Revolutionary War pieces as well as a great piece of Americana, (the box). Very few of these boxes have survived or were even made. To find it hold it's original tools is quite incredible. The leather covering has survived well, t are no breaks, splits or rips except for a slight rub or bruise on the left top front as shown in the photos. Even the back leather hinge covers are still all original and in great working order. The condition is very nice, t are no repairs or restoration at all, just the typical wear and tear you would see from 200 years of use. The size is wonderful, it is just 3 1/2" across the front, it is just 1 3/4" deep and it stands just 3/4" high . Typical wear associated with the age of the item. Low starting Price and NO reserve.
