Less then a week ago this very rare and early set was in a Rhode Island attic w it had been for way more then a century! And it was an antique when it was put up t! It is a vest or coat pocket cutlery set such as the type a Gentleman or Officer would have carried while away from home during the American Revolutionary War period. The knife and fork are matching. The steel blade of the knife has a sharp edge. It and the 3 tine fork are clearly hand forged steel. The handles are an ornate silver design. Clearly carried by somebody of wealth and tast. The very thin silver overlay on handles has worn off in spots showing what looks like a hard wax core. I cannot see any markings on these two pieces. The spoon does not match but was in this box when found. The mark from it being closed in the box can be clearly seen in the top cover of box. I did polish the spoon some but didnt touch the other two pieces. The spoon is an amazing 18th century hand made piece. The person who made it was clearly a master silversmith. From my limited research I believe it's German. It has a standing animal [bear ?] with a "K" on it's tail which I found out was a Berlin mark and the letter on tail indicates year of manufacture. Next to it is a script letter "A". I couldn't find out what that meant but possibly "America" for export. It has the names "Walter & Bauer". I couldn't find anything on them. The bowl of the spoon has a few small dents which can be taken out if wished. The stem of the spoon is in perfect shape and has a stunning, hand tooled design! The case was clearly made for the set [not the spoon]. It is of wood construction and covered with a green "leather looking" material and gilted designs. It has two little brass hooks which are in perfect shape. It is mostly in excellent condition less a small area on bottom that looks like it got too close to a campfire at one time. It this set could talk!! Found only blocks from the famed General Nathanial Green homestead in Coventry Rhode Island! They all knew each other in those days. The case is 8 1/2" long and 3" wide. Check out my other auction for a very cool pipe box found in same attic. Please email me with any questions.TERMS: 5 day, NO RESERVE!!! Continental USA bidders only. High bidder includes $9 shipping/handling flat rate. If payment is made quickly it can be recieved in plenty of time for Christmas. Would make a gift that would be always remembered! Thanks for looking, good luck and Happy Holidays!
