Up for sale is this beautiful Rex Professional Mandolin. This belonged to my Father-in-law who passed away recently. He enjoyed repairing antiques of all types.I am not well versed regarding this instrument but will tell you what I have observed. From looking at other pictures on the internet, it seems that he changed the top surface from the original lacquered wood that I see on others.All strings are present and there are no holes or warping. I do see on the bottom where it appears that some cracks had developed and he has repaired them to blend in very nicely.The Serial # on the instrument is 219966 if that info is of value to you. This instrument would have been built between 1902 and 1930. Further research provided the following information about this instrument. The Rex brand of instruments were produced from 1902through the mid 1930s by the Gretsch Company. The Gretsch Co. was started in Brooklyn in 1883 by Friedrich Gretsch, an immigrant from Mannheim, Germany. However, Friedrich died only two years later before he saw his industry succeed. His son, Fred, took over before leaving high school and steered the Gretsch Company into the 20th century and success. By 1905 Fred moved his company into a 10-story building in New York.
