Areatas IV was a great king who ruled S. Palestine, most of Trans-Jordan, N. Arabia and Damascus. Paul mentions Aretas in connection with his visit to Damascus (2 Corinthians 11:32).

He also had another significant biblical connection; Areatas IV was the Ex-Father-in-law to Herodius, mother of Salome who requested John the Baptist's head on a platter.
