This is a very interesting estate piece, with a reference to what it REALLY is. This rhinestone brooch measures a shade under 4 inches long, and 1 1/2 inches at the widest point. It came with a Xerox page from a reference book.....which reads in part. "A stunning piece of jewelry. Overall hand set rhinestones in a magnificent setting. The original paper label reads...FOR THE WORLD'S BEST MR. JOHN COUTOURIER JEWELS. Jewelry by Mr. John is rarely found. Unless the labels or boxes are intact, the jewelry itself is not marked. Value $300.-400." Not knowing when the reference was written, but knowing Mr. John's career was from 1929 to 1970....this piece could be worth much more. Mr. John was most famous as a milliner. His hats adorned the cover of Vogue many times, gracing newstands in 1943, 1944, 1946, and 1953. In the June 1993 New York Times, Anne-Marie Schiro wrote , " In the 1940's and 1950's the name Mr. John was as famous in the world of hats as Chistian Dior was in the realm of haute couture. At a time when other milliners were piling on flowers, feathers, and tulle, Mr. John was stripping hats naked, relying on pure shape for effect." Eugenia Sheppard of the New York Herald Tribune called him the "artist among milliners" in July 1956, adding that he courted the rubic of art, including collections with themes of modern art and read more
