This delicate and delightful Celadon bowl is from the Song dynasty (960 to 1170 AD). The skill with which the more than 70 grooves were molded into porcelain so fine that their imprint appears on the inside of the bowl is almost beyond belief. The name Celadon derives from two Sanskrit words: 'Sila', which means stone, and 'Dhara', which means green. Therefore, celadon means green stone. There is some wear on the bottom of the inside, as might be expected, but unfortunately there is also a crack along one rib with some associated glaze cracks (but the latter do not extend to the inside). We wondered if this could be one of the rare Ru Celadons, with their pale bluish green glazes, which were reserved exclusively for the aesthetic Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song dynasty (960 to 1127 AD) The low price would make it quite an attractive potential investment if you’re so inclined!
