In 1988,I bought several pipes from a gentleman in mid-state Pa. who happen to be a past customer of Dick Johnson's. This gentleman had only smoked these pipes several times before deciding that he wasn't really a pipe smoker. This pipe has been only lightly smoked and would be a great item for the collector or smoker that would enjoy smoking one of the finest domestically produced pipes ever. Dick Johnson was indeed one of the finest craftsman of the 20th century. He had mentored such notable other pipe makers such as J.M.Boswell. During the 1970's and 80's, Dicks' shop in Carlisle was frequented by many that enjoyed good coffee, scotch or bourbon and the impromptu conversation around the old pot-bellied stove. While this little piece of Americana may be gone, a few examples of his handiwork like this pipe are still around. Trade mark is the the "script signature" typical of Dicks 1980's work.
