Fantastic California modernist landscape with heavy impasto by listed Carmel artist Richard Lofton (1908-1966) who was the director of the Carmel Art Association for many years. Signed and dated 1965 lower right and titled on reverse "Landscape at Rocky Creek". Understand that Rock Creek is near Carmel, Big Sur etc. Painting measures 24" by 28" and is housed in a period mid-century modern gray wood frame 28" by 32". Very nice example of Lofton's work. Until recently hung in the home of a Lofton relative in South Carolina. Excellent condition and great fauvist palette. Would probably really pop with a coat of varnish. Biography Richard Lofton Born in McClellanville, SC on March 23, 1908. At 18 Lofton received a scholarship to the NAD, but stayed only a few weeks. He then led a Thoreau-like existence, learning to paint in his own way. A veteran of WWII, he settled on the Monterey Peninsula in 1945 and was director of the Carmel Art Ass'n for many years.
