Richard Marsh - The Beetle - 1897 UK first edition published by Skeffington & Son. The book is squarely and fairly firmly bound in the original red cloth, distinctively lettered and illustrated in gilt, green and black, the boards are very slightly marked, the spine is a touch faded, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and there are minor tears to the cloth at the spine, which have been neatly repaired. The text block is complete with the original floral endpapers front and rear, it is slightly cracked at the hinges and at a few other points, it is age browned and slightly foxed, more so to the edges, with a neatly written name and date to the half title page. A gripping supernatural novel, published in the same year as Dracula. Which contains some superbly quotable lines: "Should Paul Lessingham chance to come upon you, and find you in his house, a thief, and should seek to stay you from whatever it is you may be at, you will not flinch nor flee from him, but you will stand still, and you will say […] THE BEETLE!".
