Questions? Please call us at . Please carefully review the photos. You are bidding on an ANTIQUE Richmond, Virginia, trolley mechanized sign box unit with a complete roll sign inside! The sign box is made of wood with pot metal gears. The sign itself is made of a cloth-like material called Vellum, which is made of calf skin. The back side of the mechanism is a door, which opens vertically, to reveal the geared mechanism and crank handle. The handle rotates the sign very smoothly in both directions. The side of the unit that shows the destinations used to have a piece of glass protecting it that is now missing. The glass on the side with the door (shown in photo 2) is still intact. Public transport in Richmond mirrored services found in just about every major city in the United States. The first horse-drawn lines were constructed in the decade following the completion of The Civil War. However, the story strays from every other city because, on May 8, 1888, Richmond boasted the operation of the first commercial electric car in the United States. Lines expanded quickly through the first few years of the 20th Century. The interurban craze didn't catch on as well there as in other places, with only a couple of companies actually completing their rights of way and operating trolleys.
