Original vintage & rare 1967 Rick Griffin (1944-1991) Psychedelic, Summer of Love, Be-In poster. Poster made for an event at the Psychedelic Shop, Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco.19 1/4" high by 13 7/8" wide. Signed in plate by Rick Griffin. DISTRIBUTED BY BERKELEY BONAPARTE 1967,P.O. BOX 1250, BERKELEY, CALIF. Black printing on white poster paper. Main text reads; " PRESENTING THE NEW IMPROVED PSYCHEDELIC SHOP FEATURING THE 1st. ANNIVERSARY JOOK SAVAGE ART SHOW. PLUS: THE MANDALA CONTEST!! FEATURING YOU!!"Condition: Paper shows age, is not bright white. Has 4 clean tack holes, one at each corner. Has 2 darker light brown stains along right edge. T are three short tears on the left edge, not very visible. 2 converging inconspicuous flattened creases are at the top edge. Entire composition though is pretty much unblemished.I have owned this poster since 1972. A short history of the Psychedelic Shop. Ron Thelin (d.1996), one of the original and most famous hippies during San Francisco's Summer of Love and his brother, Jay, opened the Psychedelic Shop on Jan. 3, 1966, and soon had a thriving business from flower children who floated in to buy hallucinogenic paraphernalia and then drifted on through the store for a session in its meditation room, with mandalas on the wall and incense in the air.
