J. Riddle, who died in Columbus Sunday, was brought to Macon and interred at Rose Hill cemetery yesterday. The funeral services in this city were conducted by Dr. Alonzo Monk of the Mulberry Street Methodist Church. Mr. Riddle resided for a number of years, coming to Macon after the close of the war. From Macon he moved to Eufaula, Ala., and from that city moved to Columbus, w he resided until his death. Mr. Riddle was one of the pioneer photographers of the South. In thousands of homes in the South can be found samples of his skills as a photographer. Mr. Riddle was born in Baltimore, Md., Feb. 22, 1828 and was 69 years of age when he died. After he reached manhood, he came South and located at Columbus and engaged in the photograph business. While in Columbus, he married Miss Annie Hunley, a member of one of the leading families in that section. When the war broke out, Mr Riddle enlisted in the Southern army and fought bravely for three years. His experience was somewhat an adventurous one, for he was captured by the enemy three times, and once stayed in the capitol prison eight months. It was during the war that Mr. Riddle's genius came very handy to the Southern government. The officials discovered that he was an artist, and accordingly toward the last of the war, he was placed at work making maps for the officials of the army. He worked faithfully at this, and the maps he turned out were of great value to the Confederate army. When Atlanta was captured, Mr. Riddle removed to Macon. It was that he attained great popularity as a photographer of merit and original ideas. During his residence in this city he established various galleries in other parts of the state. At one time he had four galleries running. The one in Macon being the principal establishment. Mr Riddle was the inventor of the dual picture - an invention by which two pictures can be taken on the same negative. He might have made money off his invention had he been disposed, but he never made an effort to do so. Mr. Riddle was a great friend of Sarony, the great artist of New York. Mr Riddle is survived by his widow and three children: Mr John Riddle of Columbus, Mr George A Riddle and Miss Susie Riddle of Chicago. He has three small children sleeping in the family lot at Rose Hill cemetery. Mr Riddle's mother died at Lumpkin, age 99 years. He was a member of the Masonic order, and a consistent member of the Methodist church. When death came to him, the heart of a generous man, a loyal friend and a good citizen was stilled. While his loss is great to those who were near and dear to him, he will be missed by hundreds who counted him a friend..............................................................................................................We love rare and odd items so please be sure and check out our other auctions and bookmark us as a favorite seller as we list new items almost every day.
