Ridgway Child’s Columbian Star Blue Transferware Ironstone Cup and Saucer, 1840

Description

Welcome to this listing. We are extremely pleased to offer this adorable child’s blue transferware ironstone unhandled cup and saucer in the pattern known as Columbian Star by the English firm of John Ridgway. Columbian Star was registered October 28, 1840. The blue transfer mark on the bottom of the saucer states “Columbian Star, Oct 18, 1840, Jn Ridgway.”

The tiny unhandled cup is 1 7/8” tall and 2 ¼” in diameter at the lip. The saucer is 4” in diameter. Both the cup and saucer have a nice shiny blue and white glaze. The pattern is very clear. These items are free of chips, cracks, hairlines, discoloration, and restoration. There are several very tiny pinpoint flakes along the foot ring, which may have occurred during manufacture. Crazing, which is common to ironstone, is present.

This wonderful unhandled cup and saucer would make a great addition to any collection of mid-19th century children’s transferware tea sets. In upcoming weeks we will offer four more cups and saucers, a sugar bowl, and a teapot.
