I am offering one of two replica chairs that I built of the Red & Blue chair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. This auction includes all of the pieces of the chair including the dowels used to hold the joints and screws for attaching the seat and back panels. Also included are very detailed instructions (see image) that I've prepared on how to assemble the chair. In addition all of the pieces have been painted with 2 coats of oil-based protective enamel paint using the classic color scheme (Black, Yellow, Red & Blue). This chair will come disassembled for easy shipping . Contents are very well packaged (see photos) with double-thick cardboard (originally used to ship bicycles). I want this chair to arrive safe and sound to you. I have taken great care to package each of the pieces so that they don't come in contact with each other during transit. I am an Interior Design Master's student and Instructor at Utah State University as well as a very big fan of Rietveld's designs. The other of the two chairs I built currently resides in the Interior Design library w I work/study. A photo of it (which is virtually identical to the one being offered in this auction) can be seen in the photos below. I have also included a few photos that were taken while I was building the chairs.After doing extensive research on Roodblauwe (Red/Blue) I was able to figure out the correct proportions of the orignal design from around 1917. Because the chair was designed to be built from stock lumber in sizes available in the Netherlands at that time I had to laterally rip the lumber used to match the intended proportions (see photo).It should be noted that this replica is a fairly modest representation of the original chair. W the original chair called for solid beech I have used birch for the construction of this one. Also it should be said that while the current finish definately looks acceptable (as you can see from the photos), I think it could look even better with one or two coats of a glossy urethane. Even so, mine doesn't have urethane and it still looks decent enough for the curator of our library to ask to display the chair.Ideally I would like this chair to find a great home in a similar minded person's studio or drawing room as a tribute to Rietveld/Mondrian/De Stijl. It's also notable that this chair is actually deceivingly comfortable to sit in for an average sized person. I have even napped in mine on numerous occasions.I am offering this unassembled replica with a very low starting price (nearly what it cost me just for materials) and t will be free shipping to anyw in the continental United States of America. I reserve the right to cancel any bids by international bidders unless they have contacted me and recieved my approval to bid. I do apologize to the foreign ebayers but I just don't think it's very feasible to ship this item internationally. Winning bidder must pay within 24 hours of auction end.
