RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER ILLUSTRATED BY GUSTAV DORE Written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge ~ 1876 Facsimile Edition ~ A world of fantasy that reflects the human condition emerges from Samuel Coleridge's famous tale of a doomed sea voyage.This edition of Coleridge's classic Romantic poem reprints the 1798 and 1817 texts and is a beautiful facsimile of the 1876 edition which includes Gustave Dore's original surrealistic black-&-white illustrations, which perfectly match Coleridge's eerie, haunting imagery. This illustrated edition of the classic poem, the story of a sailor who recounts the terrible fate that befell his ship when he shot down an albatross, features the full text of the original work. It is augmented by 38 plates of open seas, whirlpools, sea monsters, the ice of Antarctica, and more. Gustav Doré's engravings for The Rime are considered by many to be his greatest work. Although pundits of his work on The Divine Comedy or Paradise lost may argue, they are nonetheless hauntingly beautiful as are all his works. are a few examples from within. Full page images, these pale in comparison to the real deal. You really need to see the detail in these images to truly appreciate them!
