Ritter & Sullivan Sterling Silver Repousse (Baltimore Rose) Salt & Pepper Shakers We are pleased to present for your consideration this fabulous pair of shakers from this late 19th century Baltimore company. The pair measure 3 5/8" tall. The base is 1 1/8" in diameter. They weigh a combined 3.2 ounces. The bottoms are stamped with Ritter & Sullivan's maker's mark, as well as the "Welsh & Bros" name. Welsh & Bros. was a Baltimore retailer who bought goods from other companies and put their own name on the pieces. They are also stamped "Sterling" and 925 over 1000. Ritter & Sullivan was another one of Baltimore's premier silversmiths who made high end hollowware for both retail and wholesale markets. They created some of the most striking repousse or Baltimore Rose pieces in sterling silver as evidenced by these salt and pepper shakers. When their pieces come to auction they realize substantial prices in the same league with S. Kirk & Son, Stieff and Schofield. The firm operated as Ritter & Sullivan from about 1900 - 1915. This pair of shakers feature fully repoussed bodies and caps. The repousse is highly detailed floral work with multiple flower types and other foliate. The repousse is still crisp and sharp after all of these years. I can't find a single fault with this pair. It is possible that they have never been used. I can't see any salt burning even inside the salt shaker, just some slight tarnishing inside the cap. The tops open and close as they should, just snug enough to stay closed during use but open with relative ease. Overall, this is just a extraordinary pair of shakers from another of Baltimore's fabulous silver companies. Thanks for Looking and Good Luck!! |
