1936 RMS Queen Mary First Class Smoking Lounge Table

This is an orginal cocktail / card table finished in brown curly oak from the Cabin Class smoking room of the RMS Queen Mary. On the inside of the top t is a tag that reads: "Queen Mary" Cabin Smoke Room. As part of the Queen Mary's original 1936 compliment of furnishings this table was designed and built by G.T. Rackstraw Ltd. of Worcester, England. Founded by George Rackstraw this company had been making fine period furniture since the late 19th Century. The company's illustrious history has seen them design and make furniture for the opulent lounges of great ocean liners, major company boardrooms and furnish some of Great Britain's grandest houses. Sadly this firm after being in business for over 100 years closed its doors in 2003. Although this table is labled from the "Cabin Smoke Room" which was the pre-World War II name for the first class smoking lounge the table appears, based on period photos, to be more similar to the tables used in the second class smoking lounge called the Tourist Class Smoke Room (see last photo) rather than first class smoking room (see second to last photo).

The top flips from a hard black top on one side to an off white felt top on the other. It measures 30 inches in diameter and 29.5 inches tall. T is a second shelf underneath w the veneer with a spider web like inlay design has come off and two bolt holes orginally for securing the table to the floor. T is a brass plate on each of the stretchers to protect them from people's shoes.

The Queen Mary had her maiden voyage on May 27,1936. In August of 1936 she won the Blue Riband for the fastest North Atlantic crossings from the French Line's Normandie. She went into war service from March 1940 to September 1946, transporting Winston Churchill three times. Then back to peacetime passenger service. The Queen Mary arrived in Long Beach, California on Saturday, December 8, 1967 and changed ownership from the British registry to the City of Long Beach on Monday, December 11, 1967, w it can be visited today. From 1968 to present with the remodling of the Queen Mary to make her into a hotel her original passenger lounges from all three classes were stripped of all furnishings which included this table and pressed into other services. The former first class smoking room is now a multi-purpose catering room and the second class smoking room is now a wedding chapel.
