* POEMS selected from the HESPERIDES of ROBERT HERRICK * New Rochelle, NY: Printed and Sold by Clark Conwell at the Elston Press MDCCCCIII * Extremely Scarce One of only 260 copies printed Tall Foolscap Quarto, 9" x 6.75"; 157pp. Bound in blue-grey art-papered boards over natural linen spine; pastedown paper label to spine. Printed on finest laid paper. With two lovely woodcuts, and exuberant floriated initials, by H. M. O'Kane. This selection includes some 273 pieces from the original edition of 1648. * Only those who collect Fine Press books can understand how wonderful a book this is! Conwell's Elston Press was a well-respected American Fine Press; his work was in the same spirit as the productions of the Kelmscott and Doves Presses...a marvelous Arts & Crafts period piece. The original binding doesn't do justice to the contents; this belongs in a fine leather binding. The type is deeply impressed, creating a delightful tactile quality to the pages. The ink is richly black, the crimson brilliant. * Robert Herrick (1591~1674) was a 17th Century English poet; his reputation rests primarily on his Hesperides, a collection of lyric poetry published in 1648.
