ROBERT TANENBAUM (LISTED CALIFORNIA 1936 - ). INDIAN WOMAN "GRANDMA WILLY", 12" x 16" oil over casein on masonite (framed size: 20" x 24") signed lower right. This particular Indian woman is possibly a favored subject by the artist as I found two other pieces the artist painted one entitled "Remembering" and "Tortoise Lady" that appear to be the same Indian woman. This biography from the Archives of AskART: The following was submitted in September of 2006 by Corinne Cain:Robert Tanenbaum was born in 1936Robert Tanenbaum was born in Missouri in 1936. A gifted portrait artist from early on, Tanenbaum easily captured a sitter's likeness. This talent led him to study art at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he earned his Fine Arts degree.Robert has a system of working with casein and oils involving a preliminary graphite drawing on a gessoed board. Next 80% of the composition is laid in using casein. Over the casein he applies oil paint.In 1964 he moved from Missouri to Los Angeles where his skill in depicting a person's character was utilized in the production of movie posters. His other illustrations include 2 1/2 years of ads for Levi jeans. The group portrait of all the actors of the television series /Roots/ was shown at the beginning of this well-known series.In 1971 his work was chosen as a purchase prize of the National Watercolor Society. He also did an acrylic plate design for John Wayne, Cowboy Legend and we found a recent work in watercolor/gouache of Tiger Woods, Championship Season. Further information: When Robert Tanenbaum entered Washington University in St. Louis, he had no prior art training. As a freshman he was awarded first place in the all college portrait competition. Tanenbaum is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society; one of 22 members out of 1300 members to be nationally certified by The American Portrait Society; one of only 350 that has been elected as an Artist member of the California Art Club and an artist member of National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic. Tanenbaum is fulfilling a lifelong dream of painting for galleries, his painting include, Native Americans , working cowboys, portraits and contemporary subjects. All of his gallery painting are now executed in oil on linen. He is currently showing his work in galleries in Sedona, Arizona; New York, New York; and Fairview, New Jersey. Recently he was greatly honored when he was made a blood brother of the Cherokee Nation. A partial list of his corporate portraits include the previous three CEO’s of United Parcel Service (UPS), two for Texaco Oil, nine for Southern California Edison; six of which were posthumous, also a life-size full length posthumous painting of Howard Hughes for Hughes Aircraft, Wout van Bavel of Holland, Gary Jordan on his horse ‘Socks’ in front of Pikes Peak, Colorado, Don Raich with his 1963 Rolls Royce, F. Katiyama, past president of Nissan Motors USA, Frederick R. Weisman for the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation and authors Will and Ariel Durant. The computer magazine Reseller News commissioned Tanenbaum to paint portraits for articles of the top 25 Internet executives. The John Wayne family and The Franklin Mint commissioned Tanenbaum to paint 24 portraits of JW’s life. He has also painted many portraits of women, children and other clients with their horses. Tanenbaum has executed numerous portraits for the movie industry and has been commissioned to do over 200 paintings of famous sports figures in Nascar, baseball, basketball, football, hockey and horse racing.
