Great 184 pages to this edition of the classic tale of a shipwrecked sailor, noteworth for its 70 charming Victorian engravings. Mild to moderate wear, some rubbing to corners, internally overall clean. Good condition. Inside & outside hinges are in great condition. Previous owners signature on the first empty page. It measures approx. 6 1/4" tall by 5" wide. Pictures are on the bottom of the page. Pictures are a part of the description. Daniel Defoe created an amazing tale of Robinson Crusoe, a man left to fend for himself after a terrible storm at sea. Lost on an island alone, he has only a knife, some tobacco, and a pipe...and plenty of time to learn how to survive. In April 1719 Defoe published his most enduring work, The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. The immediate success of the story of the shipwrecked Crusoe's solitary existence on a desert island for more than 20 years, of his encounter with the native Friday, and of his eventual rescue inspired Defoe to write The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe later in 1719 and Serious Reflections during the Life and Surprising Adventures in 1720. That year he published another travel novel, The Life, Adventures, and Piracies of the Famous Captain Singleton. The greatness of Robinson Crusoe lies not only in Defoe's marvelously realistic descriptive passages but in the fact that the novel recounts one of the great myths of Western civilization - man's ability to endure, survive, and conquer a hostile environment. As a fictional adaptation of the story of Alexander Selkirk, who had been stranded on an island near Chile early in the century, the novel shows Augustan England's interest in travel literature, religious allegory, and mercantilist economics. The Author of the perennial Robinson Crusoe was born in London, England, in 1661. His father was a butcher, who educated his son for the ministry, among the dissenters, but could never persuade him to pursue that vocation. He was remarkable for the versatility of his mind, and for his wonderful fertility of invention, and was a very voluminous writer, there being about two hundred and ten of his works extant, which, though chiefly fictions, produced a lively impression of truth and reality. His political works exposed him to much suffering and pecuniary loss, which he summed up in this couplet: "No man has tasted differing fortunes more; And thirteen times have I been rich and poor." Sir Walter Scott says: "Perhaps there exists no work in the English language which has been more generally read and more universally admired than the Adventures of Robinson Crusoe! The illustrations by Walter Paget fit the text excellently well. The story will no doubt find a wide circulation, having been adapted to meet the tastes of the youngest readers.
