"...of all the art that bears my name - this will surely live the longest.'': Norman Rockwell, 1972 see: BONUS This is the much sought after "Spirit of Scouting" series. Sculpted by Richard Baldwin using Norman Rockwell's artistic translation of the 12 Boy Scout Laws. I ssued in a limited mintage of 26,971 sets in 1972 after which the dies were destroyed. T he Franklin Mint and The Boy Scouts Of America vowed that this series would never be reproduced. Obverse shows Rockwell's depiction of Scout Law while reverse recants that Law. The Scout Law: 1.) A Scout is Trustworthy 7.) A Scout is Clean 2.) A Scout is Loyal 8.) A scout is Reverent 3.) A Scout is Helpful 9.) A Scout is Obedient 4.) A Scout is Friendly 10.) A Scout is Courteous 5.) A Scout is Brave 11.) A scout is Kind. 6.) A Scout is Thrifty 12.) Cheerful Many of these sets were melted, some were handled without gloves and others have medals missing. Each Proof 39mm (approx.1 1/2 inches) coin/medal has been edge stamped with the Mint seal stating its purity. The full set is 9.5 oz. Sterling or 0.8 troy oz. each. This may conflict with some sets being offered on ebay but is the only true and accurate weight for these medals as listed in the "Guidebook Of Franklin Mint Issues". The Mint has never struck any 1 oz. "Spirit Of Scouting Medals". In 1972, as Silver surged to $1.55 per oz. this set was issued for $117.00. Today, May 18, 2008 Silver is "fixed" @ $16.74 per troy oz. (over ten times the price of silver at date of issue) and some experts predict it will soon soar above the $21.00 price of just last month. Expect more of these sets to go to the smelters during this volatile market. Considering that t were only 500 sets per State at issue it is easy to understand why these beauties are so scarce . The current rage to sell these medals individually, is also rapidly reducing the # of intact Grade A, PR69-70 sets. Each Proof medal is encased in a clear 2 part Lucite holder and inserted into a Gold lettered frame suitable for hanging. Included is a Brown sleeve (see picture) which protects the frame when the medals are not displayed. The sleeve also has gold lettering on the front and spine. Certificates of Authenticity (COA), letter from The Vice President of the Franklin Mint, and a sheet containing The Franklin Mint special instructions on caring for and preserving these works of art is included. ALL AS NEW, a complete set with untarnished Sterling Medals/Coins encased in unblemished lucite capsules (no crazing or yellowing) with complete documentation. You get a set of rare coins in Mint /Museum condition - money back if not as described, including shipping. Norman Rockwell was cherished by Americans during his lifetime, which spanned most of the 20th Century. We have not lost our appetite for his art and these medals/coins are the most sought after Franklin Mint issues and their price continues to rise. This is not a second hand set to be played with but perhaps a special presentation to an Eagle Scout or about to be Eagle Scout or use as a display for special Scouting ceremonies. The light reflected to the camera on the unfrosted portions of some of the medals causes a faulty appearance that t are black portions of the medals. These medals are all solid Sterling Silver and do not contain any coloring. Shipped Via USPS Priority Mail complete with tracking and insurance.
