Roger B. Taney was Attorney General and Secretary of the Treasury under Andrew Jackson. He was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1836-64, and handed down the Dred Scott decision. This is an autograph note signed while he was practicing law in Maryland. It is a February 15, 1810 note to his clerk, William Ritchie, asking him to file a case, Thomas Noland vs Valentine P. Luckett. Taney wrote out the title of the case and then wrote, "Mr Ritchie, file as above." The case most likely involved a land dispute. The piece is 5 x 8 inches. There is a rough tear lower left and the horizontal fold has short splits at each end. There is a filing notation on the back which shows through a bit, and there is a little discoloration on the back and right edge. The item was photographed on a sheet of brown paper, just to show contrast. It is not mounted. The writing is clear and it has a clean signature of Taney. The Sanders guide puts his signature at $98, so I'll open the bidding at half of that.I will ship anywhere in the United States USPS First Class for a $2.32 fee. Overseas buyers will be charged $12. Satisfaction guaranteed with cheerful no-questions-asked refund.
