This Silver Denarius has been encapsulated and preserved as it is quite scarce in this condition. The Roman denarius was a silver coin first struck from about 200 BC until roughly 230 AD. It was the most common coin produced for circulation in Rome. The Severan Emperors (193AD-235AD) steadily debased the denarius from a standard of 78.5% to 50% fine silver. It was replaced in circulation by the double denarius.Julia Maesa was grandmother of both the Roman emperors Elagabalus and Alexander Severus and she figured prominently in the ascension of each. With her daughter, Julia Soaemias, she administered Elagabalus' reign. When it became clear that Elagabalus would not last long because of wild and erratic behavior she turned her support to Alexander Severus. She died in 224 AD having had less influence on Alexander's rule. She was one of the most important women to exercise power behind the throne in the Roman Empire.Specifications for this Roman Jul Maesa 218-224/5 AD Silver Denarius Colosseum Hoard NGC Ch read more
