Romanesque Cranberry Silverplate Pickle Condiment Jam Castor Holder Up for auction is a stunning 1870's antique silverplate caster with it's original deep cranberry glass insert jar and lid. I'm not sure if you would classify this as a pickle, jam, sweetmeat or condiment castor, however those that I have seen were called pickle castors. The silverplate is in beautiful condition, bright, shiny and clean with only a couple of tiny spots of wear. All pieces are original to each other and complete and has four interesting cameos in silver depicting the head of a Roman Soldier. The liner is hand blown with a ground and polished base and in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. The stand is stamped "Redfield & Rice Co. New York", in business from 1850-1872, then went out of business in 1872 and the next year bought by Derby Silver Co. The only condition problem to report is a minor divot in the plating on the rim of the stand which appears to be a manufacture flaw and not a big deal (3rd pic. the one with the lace and lid on around 2:00). Measurements are 6 3/4 inches high by 6 5/8 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches in diameter. If you are looking for a lovely piece of colored antique tableware for the holidays or any day, then this piece would be perfect.
