Romania Kingdom was ruled from 1866 to 1947. Ancient area of Romania, generally referred as the Kingdom of Dacia existed as early as 200 BC, in the reign of Emperor Augustus, the Dacians began to provoke the Romans, and in a series of campaigns 101/102 AD and 105-106AD. Emperor Trajan conquered Dacia and converted it into a Roman province. During the 3rd. century AD raids by the Goths became so grave a menace that the Roman legions were withdrawn across the Danube in 271AD. While successive waves of invaders made the country a battleground, the Romanized population preserved the Latin speech and identity and its Christianity. During 900/1200AD, the Romanian dukedoms of Transylvania were unable to resist the Hungarian infiltration and became under the King's of Hungary. Through the various centuries up to the 15th. its prevailed but by the defeat in 1526, Hungary came under the Turkish rule. Transylvania became a separate principality under the under the protection of the Sultan (1541). The erosion of Turkish influence became more evident through the 18th. century and under the rule of the Sultan, the Turkish as such 1829 his commerce monopoly was abolished.
