Rare and unusual Rookwood vase in the shape of a basket, signed by Artus Van Briggle and dated 1891. Van Briggle, considered one of the greatest of American Art potters, joined Rookwood in 1887, and by 1891 he was a senior decorator and had his own studio within the pottery. He left Rookwood in 1899 because of ill health, moving to Colorado; and the rest, as they say, is history. This piece measures approximately 10" by 8" by 7" high. The vase is decorated with raised coneflowers, simply and gloriously applied, on a gound of lustrous, shimmering brown. The inside turns to yellow at the center. The marks on the bottom are clearly visible, the incised initials AVB, impressed number 360; a B, a W, are impressed, as well as the Rookwood mark with five flames indicating the year 1891. This piece is in perfect condition, was found wrapped in a box w it had rested for about 40 years.
