Y ou are bidding on an extremely RARE piece ofRookwood Pottery. This item comes from the personal estate of Dr. Arthur Townley. Dr. Townley holds a very special place in the history of Rookwood Pottery. As the U.S. was being flooded with inexpensive, mass-produced ceramics from abroad, observers thought Rookwood might go out of business or be sold to an overseas firm. In 1982, in order to preserve the company, Dr. Townley, a retired Michigan dentist and ardent Rookwood collector, bought the business and with it thousands of original Rookwood molds and hundreds of glaze formulas. He then spent the next thirteen years cataloging, organizing and preserving the legacy of the company that was once considered America’s finest Art Pottery. In order to keep Rookwood trademarks alive, Dr. Townley produced some limited edition ceramic figurines made from Rookwood molds which he chose to coat with a 24 karat gold finish (gold certainly was much cheaper back then). This particular piece is one of the few LIMITED EDITION pieces produced during the ownership of the company by Dr. Townley. Because these gold finished pieces were only produced during his ownership, it makes them extremely RARE and IMPORTANT to the Rookwood legacy. Don’t miss your chance to own a part of this legacy.
