Antique Bavarian Vase "White Rock" Nymph This auction is for a magnificent antique vase from Bavaria. Circa late 19th century. The vase features an incredibly beautiful depiction of what looks to be the original White Rock nymph, Psyche, in the classic pose showing the scantily clad seductress kneeling beside the water. The artwork is signed "Frenzel". The artwork bears an absolutely striking resemblance to that of the original artwork by German artist Paul Thumann. (Please see below for the history.) The reverse of the vase shows a similar though wingless seated lady gazing out at the water in an equally picturesque and tranquil scene. This artwork is signed with what appears to be "Kruutsgem".Portions of the vase are creamy white while other areas feature a striking pearlescent green luster finish. The colors are separated with ornate laurel type borders done in rich gilt. Single stylized flowers, also done in gilt, decorate the upper portion of the vase. The underside of the vase bears the R C Bavaria mark, an early mark of Philip Rosenthal & Company (established 1884).The vase is in very nice condition showing only minor age wear. T is a tiny chip to the rim which is not at all obtrusive to the display of this rare piece. We also noticed what appears to be a manufacturing flaw to the outer rim. It is under the glaze and also unobtrusive. The striking colors remain incredibly vibrant. (The vase is truly more beautiful in person!)Measures approximately 7 1/4" high and 3" in diameter. In True Auction Format . . . Low Start Bid ~ No Reserve Happy Bidding and Good Luck! About the White Rock Nymph . . . The story of how Psyche came to represent the White Rock Company starts at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. White Rock executives were awestruck by the beauty, youth and purity depicted in a painting titled "Psyche at Nature's Mirror" by German artist Paul Thumann. They purchased the rights to the painting and adopted Psyche as their logo.Psyche was a mortal princess in Greek mythology and was an allegorical personification of the human soul. According to mythology she is mistaken for Venus because she is so beautiful. Venus gets jealous and has her son Eros (Cupid in Roman mythology) involved in a plot to make her life miserable. Eventually she marries Eros and becomes immortal but not before going through a lot of hardships. Psyche has the wings of a butterfly to depict immortality. Her story represents the pre-existence of the soul suffering in this life, going astray but remaining faithful to her ideals. She accepts her fate while showing courage and counting on love to lead her to life. Psyche continues to stand for the pure, vital refreshment of all White Rock products. (Internet Resource) Rosenthal China History . . . Phillip Rosenthal started the Rosenthal China Company in 1884. The business began in Selb, Bavaria (Germany) and quickly expanded to other villages. Phillip Rosenthal built his company by buying white porcelain from another company called Hutschenreuther. He then designed his pieces based on patterns developed by his wife, Maria. During the 1890s and early 1900s, the Rosenthal China Co. acquired numerous factories throughout Germany. During the onset of World War II, Rosenthal and his family fled the country. At that time, the Rosenthal China Co. operated nearly a dozen outlets and employed thousands of people. When World War II ended, the Rosenthal family returned to Germany to pick up the pieces of their business. Through perseverance and dedication, Phillip Rosenthal Jr. rebuilt his father's empire and made it even more successful than it was before. Rosenthal pieces are very distinguished. At once inimitable and intuitive, the designs are ageless. Despite marketplace pressures to speed up production and mass-produce some of the more popular Rosenthal pieces, the company has held fast to its ideals of quality and "better form."
