Rosenthal is one of the oldest and amongst the best known of German porcelain makers, creating the highest quality beautiful porcelain. The Italian designer Versace designed a special decorative/collectibles line for them and this is one of the most delightful pieces in that line. Its no longer made and VERY HARD TO FIND!!! An amazing collaboration between the Germans and Italians! With the Rosenthal & Versace Logos, the marking on the back of the plate says this: Rosenthal studio-line Germany -- VERSACE "Le Roi Soleil" (the sun king!) T's a little sticker that says: "Kontrollstelle 16" -- which is the inspection sticker/certification. Gloriously, stunningly, festively bright and beautiful -- this is an eye catching, very dignified and refined looking piece while being somewhat whimsical and playful and very lively at the same time. It is no doubt a conversation piece that will brighten up and add much life to any spot w its hung! The jester in the center is framed by a delightful array of angels and cherubs and flowers and fruits in lovely shades of yellow, orange, royal blue, green, gold, a sort of terra cotta red... The design is very "italianate" -- very finely done, with much delicate detail. The border of the plate is decorated with nouveau-florentine flourishes and very small geometric (this is also very florentine-- from the moors) marquetry at the outer edge. A masterpiece, truly!!! This is a decorative piece to be hung on the wall and was made with a little hook on the back to be able to do so. If you prefer to place it in a plate stand on a shelf, the little hook would not be visible. Also, I would think you could use it as a decorative serving plate for chocolates or nuts or something and the little hook just tucks/folds under in the back with no problem. The diaameter is 6 7/8 inches. T is a tiny spot w the 'gold leaf' is slightly faded -- so tiny it doesn't show up on the photo and is barely detectable.
