An especially handsome ormolu mounted rosewood and marquetry Neo-Classical Mantle Clock, France, circa 1830. Standing 20" tall, this clock's impressive four column form is based on the Classical architectural Portico of Greece, Rome, and Egypt, which was greatly admired during the 'Age of Enlightenment'. The clock has an eight day time and strike movement of excellent quality with silvered engine turned dial, and original blued steel hands. The beautiful cast, chased, and engraved bezel, pendulum, and column fittings exhibit the best craftsmanship of the period, and retain 97% original gilding. The rosewood casework, with contrasting marquetry and delicate line inlay (including the columns) shows excellent craftsmanship and design. The case is in excellent condition with old finish and patina. This clock exemplifies the best of its period.
