VOLUMES I AND II. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1957 [1922]. Very Scarce. A nice set of this classic historical work on ancient Roman history. When it was first published in 1922, this monumental work was groundbreaking, in that it focussed classicial historians on issues of economics and society, not just on the military and politics. These handsome books have 80 illustrations, and are in excellent condition, solid and complete and with the original dust jacket. Original sets usually sell for between $75 and $150. Such a nice set is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. According to the publisher: "First published in 1926 and revised by P.M. Fraser in 1957, Rostovtzeff's study of the Roman Empire was coloured by his bitterness at the Bolshevik victory in his native Russia. A flawed classic that has been described as 'the source, the inspiration, and the despair of scholars', the work enlarged the role of archaeological evidence in the writing of ancient history; it also looks towards what Stirling Dow called 'the seismic power of economic facts' and was the first to interpret the social and economic history of ancient Rome in the light
