ROTEL RA-610 AMPLIFIER 1972Part of my collection of Hi-Fi Built up over the years must go!.These early 1970's Amplifiers had the Quality built into them as well as looking good.This Model has solid wood side shoulders and a Brushed Aluminium front with period Slider controls for the Bass and Treble which often get damaged or the finger grips go missing - nothing like that on this particular example.All the usual array of Phono / Din connections at the rear. In Excellent condition and in Full Working order, this is a good example of this increasingly hard-to-find Amplifier from the 'Golden Age' of Solid State Transistor Amplifiers, almost has a valve powered Amp type feel to it.It will adequately fill an average sized room without distortion occuring. The styling is attractive with a finely brushed front panel, hardwood end cheeks, black grained perforated top panel, passivated bottom perforated panel with soft rubber bushes. The back panel is black anodised aluminium and the legend on all the controls and connections is very legible; a very attractive design overall.The front panel carries the following controls: mains power push-button and indicator lamp: mode selector switch for reverse stereo, left, right and mono; variable rotary balance control; rotary volume control; four slider controls for bass and treble of each channel; and input selector switch for phono 1, phono 2, tuner, auxiliary 1 and auxiliary 2. At a lower level is a stereo headphones socket and eight press-buttons for alternative pairs of loudspeakers, muting, low and high filters, tone control defeat, tape monitor and loudness.On the rear panel there is a group of five pairs of phono sockets for phono 1 and 2, tuner, auxiliary 1 and 2. Below is a DIN 5-pin socket as an alternative to phono sockets for tape out, and a pair of phono sockets for tape in. Then, an unusual feature, two links which join the pre-amplifier to the power amplifier, screw earth connector and two groups of spring loaded terminals for loudspeakers, each with a 3A fuse, American type 2-pin switched mains socket, mains fuse of 1 5A, and a captive 5' 6" three-core mains cable with the new colour coding. Also on the back panel is a perforated metal cover protecting the four output transistors.Removing the top and bottom panels gives access to nearly all components. There are five printed circuits boards, one mou ited at the rear of the volume and balance controls, another directly mounted on the eight pressbuttons, a third on the slider tone controls. In case of failure of any component on these first three boards, a fair amount of stripping down is necessary before the component can be changed. The main chassis also carries the mains transformer, three large electrolytic smoothing capacitors and a change-over plug for 100-117v or 220-240V AC mains.Although the Rotel RA-610 is an integrated system, the pre-amplifier and power amplifier are quite separate and are externally linked by two pairs of phono sockets. Thus the pre-amplifier can be used in isolation or with alternative power amplifiers. The circuit uses npn silicon transistors throughout, with a number of silicon diodes. The power supply is fairly conventional with positive and negative rails for the penultimate and power stages.
