The world's most prestigious dinner service! One of the last luxury services still in existence from the 18th century is perhaps the world's most prestigious dinner service in production today. Flora Danica is reputed to be one of the most original and inspired products of the European art industry from the golden age of porcelain. Flora Danica is considered the most exclusive and costly dinner service in the world. It is still made exactly as 200 years earlier. The edges are painted by the gold decorator with 24 carat gold. While the porcelain is still soft, the edges and perforations are cut out by hand. Followed by the delicate flower decorations on the lids and handles shaped leaf-by-leaf. The original Flora Danica dinner service was commissioned by King Christian VII from the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory in 1790. According to tradition, the service was to be a gift to Czarina Catherine II of Russia, but she died in 1796 before the 1,802 pieces were finished. So the Danish King kept the Flora Danica service for himself and it was first used at his birthday banquet on January 29, 1803. To this very day Flora Danica is still moulded and painted by hand as it was more than 200 years ago. The elaborate and intricate overglaze decorations contain more than 700 wild plants in their patterns, all culled from the old encyclopaedia "Flora Danica".
