Published by WESTERN PUBLISHING HOUSE, CHICAGO. 1879. Description: finely bound in black morocco leather with decoration in gold gilt. Beveled edges. Raised bands and gold decoration to spine. Owner's name stamped in gold on front cover. All edges gilt. Gold filigree decoration to inside edges. Frontispiece and additional fine engravings by Illman Brothers. Tissue guards. 600 pages plus 8 pages of endorsements. Size: 6 1/4 x 9 x 2 1/2 " . Condition: Light wear to covers with some rubbing to edges and tips. Small scar to leather on back cover. Binding is tight although t is some cracking between the front end papers. Damp-staining to edges of illustration pages and tissue-guards. Some scattered light foxing and a few additional areas of light staining. "This Book Given To" stamp inside front cover with recipient's name crossed out. Very Good condition. Victorian "self-help" with instructions for living a virtuous and moral life. This was the finest binding available for this "subscription only" book. Stunning!
