In 1870, two German immigrants, Joseph Rubsam and August Horrman opened a brewery in the Stapleton section of Staten Island, New York. Within six short years, their fine beers won three Gold Medals at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Celebration. R&H, as they were known, became the recognized leaders of East Coast brewers until their doors closed in 1953. During this time, fine products such as Pilsners, Eisbier, Stout, Porter and others were introduced to the taste buds of their discriminate customers. However, they were mostly know for their award winning beers and ales. No other East Coast Brewers , before or since, have been know for a higher level of brewing art. This R&H #426 reefer car is a tribute to the company, collectors of breweriana and classic scale trains. The current exclusive and only distributor, Greybar Locomotive Works, studied archival photographs, consulted with current and former area residents familiar with the company, and even the Curator of a famous Staten Island Museum. At every opportunity, time, care, and consideration was taken to get colors, graphics, texture, and feel just right.
