Extremely Rare Blood-red Ruby Gemstone Antique Ruby Gemstone Seated Crown Buddha of Transparent Blood-Red, Stupa Relic. Description: A spectacular antique hand-carved Blood-Red Ruby Gemstone Seated Crowned Buddha, recovered from a Stupa excavation in the village of Hot'e, near the Burmese border of Thailand in the Golden Triangle region. The buddha image is beautifully rendered with impressive authority, from a solid piece of high quality gemstone, mined from the earth. The stylistic considerations of the piece indicating an age of between 300 to 400 years old or earlier. Relics of this type were typically used as commemorative objects, modeled in different forms, usually buddha images, animal figures, and miniature stupas which held the remains of buddha's ashes. They were placed in small clay vessels (vat) within the interior walls of monumental size 'Stupa' structures (conical towering spirals). Stupas were constructed as religious sanctuaries, objects of veneration and a place associated with the life of buddha and in remembrance of the buddhas existence and his enlightenment. Image Details: The buddha image is portrayed meditating in the seated position or 'Virasana' posture, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands display the 'Dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual profection, gesture, with both hands overlapping one another and open-palms lying upwards. His face has a serene meditative expression, defined by delicately rendered semi-closed down cast eyes. Arched eyebrows meet at the center atop a prominent nose, and well shaped mouth with rather thick lips bears the hint of a smile. The unadorned elongated earlobes stop short of his shoulders. The head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a conical shaped Ushnisha, a tiered coiffure consisting of three graduated sections, divided by elaborate pointed-edged tips, which rise upwards into a gem radiance finial. The crown itself is adorned with incised wire-like designs and patterns. At the back, below the major band is a plate covering the lower part of the head, bearing incised vertical rows of braided hair. The figure is dressed in royal regalia, with the robe worn daigonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare, and is indicated by an incised line. ......As with crowned images a jeweled necklace rest from his shoulders, with further ornamentation in the form of embroidered jewlry, bracelets, armlets, and anklets. The entirety is supported by a small triangular shape pedestal. The surface of the stone is partially covered with a naturally aged gilt-gold lacquer pigment. Traces of encrusted soil deposits are embedded on the surface, from the environment in which it was buried.Excellent condition, naturally aged with no cracks, chips or repairs. Data Observation: Considerable Heavy (hardness score '9.0' on the Mohs scale). High quality clear deep blood-red. With natural gemstones, flaws and inclusions occur.
