This is an extremely deep... "Ruby Red" Glass Water Pitcher... in the old "Cherry and Cable" pattern. We could very easily classify this glass color as "Royal Ruby"... a glass color that I believe was patented by either the Anchor Hocking Glass Company... or the Atlas Hocking Glass Company. The depth of the Ruby Red color... the quality of the material used... and the exquisite finish... combine to make this one outstanding piece of glassware. This beauty stands an impressive 8 ¼ inches tall...5 ½ inches across at the widest point... and just a bit over 8 inches from the tip of the pour spout to the curve of the handle. I've looked this beauty over quite thoroughly... and it appears to be in absolutely perfect condition. The surface of this Pitcher has a mirror like finish. Only Molds of the highest quality are capable of producing a flawless surface like this. As for this old "Cherry and Cable" pattern... if my memory serves me right... was first introduced by the Northwood Glass Company in the very early 1900's. After they closed... in I believe 1913... the pattern was used extensively by the Westmoreland Glass Company... and without a doubt utilizing the original Northwood molds. However... this piece has no markings on it that I can find. At one point in time... many of the glass makers got their heads together and agreed that they would not mark their products... so that sales personal would represent... not just a single company... but many companies... and carry a much wider range of items. This provided many glass makers with much wider markets... better exposure to retailers... and the buying public. However... this agreement didn't work out too well with some of the more affluent makers... their higher quality items were being represented alongside lesser quality pieces... that were being offered at lower prices. This hurt the "brand identification" of the better quality makers... and after just a few years... the agreement fell apart. So it's not uncommon today... to find pieces made by some of the top quality glass makers... but without their identifying marks. When I was a kid... a big old Water Pitcher like this was a common fixture on our dinner table... and always contained fresh ice-water. T was 10 in our family... and not always a lot of food to go around. So a good big glass of water helped fill that empty spot in your belly!!!... I don't believe many dining tables are graced with these large Water Pitchers anymore... they've seemed to have gone the way of the Spooners... Butter Dishes... Salt Dips... Bone Dishes and all the other items that used to be everyday visitors... to yesterday's dinner table. But if you didn't see fit to use this beauty as a Water Pitcher... wouldn't it make a absolutely stunning Vase!!!.... I can assure you... it'll take some kind of a bouquet to keep the viewers eyes on the flowers... and off this gorgeous Ruby Red Water Pitcher. Elegant design... unsurpassed workmanship... and unbelievable color. What more could we ask for in a "art-glass" treasure like this???...
