This COLLECTIBLE BRIAR PIPE is an ATTRACTIVE, RUGGED STANWELL "ROOK" and one of the "end of the line" pipes HAND MADE IN DENMARK prior to the demise of this GREAT, OLD DANISH PIPEMAKER!!! Although the production of "Stanwell Pipes" continues at the Barontini Factory in Italy, STANWELL was once one of the most well-known and prolific Pipemakers in DENMARK!!! That is where the Company's reputation was built, and this is one of the OLD DANISH STANWELLS!!! It is a large Dunhill Group 5/6 Size and remains in PRISTINE CONDITION!!! It comes in the ORIGINAL OLDER STYLE, COTTON-LINED STANWELL GREEN and GOLD SILK SLEEVE and the ORIGINAL STANWELL BOX !!! Following the recent demise of this storied old Company, this EXCELLENT QUALITY DANISH Offering provides an opportunity to claim one of their treasures before their prices rise! Stanwell's were always marketed at a fraction of the cost you normally see on pipes from Denmark, but now that Stanwell is gone, we can expect the prices to rise as they do for all of the old discontinued brands! Starting after World War II, Stanwell was well-known throughout the world for making CLASSIC ENGLISH-STYLE Pipes which were almost a novelty among the other Danish Hand Mades at or near the cutting edge of new styles and shapes! With a purposely chosen English sounding name, Stanwell did not follow the lead of Preben Holm, Svend Axel Celius, or others in making large "Danish-style" Free Hands. Rather, they concentrated on perfecting machine-made Classic Shapes and even their HAND MADES (like this one!) reflected that! But, this 1/8 BENT FREE HAND "HORN" is an excellent example of their ablity to create non-Traditional Shapes! Every Stanwell pipe (including their "specialty pipes") were made from hand selected "Greek and Corsican bruyere roots" which received "meticulous care and attention." World famous Pipemaker, Tom Eltang did the "selecting"!!! (Stanwell briar was sorted and graded by Tom Eltang, who actually got his briar from Stanwell!) However, even though the Company closed its' doors in December of 2009 falling victim to the declining pipe market and world wide recession, the old DANISH MADE STANWELLS continue to provide inexpensive alternatives to high priced brands and you are assured of getting top quality Briar and expert craftsmanship which continued to the end! This Big Horn has a RUGGED SANDBLASTED FINISH with WELL-DEFINED FURROWS that show no sign of buffing or wear! The "Dublin Shaped" Bowl is CROWNED with a NATURAL PLATEAU TOP!!! And the HAND CUT MOUTHPIECE has the INLAID GOLD/BRASS STANWELL CROWN Logo!!! Like all Stanwell Handmades, it was created as a "distinctive specialty pipe" and there are NO chips, dents or scratches to detract from the appearance! It quite literally combines SIZE AND BEAUTY in a single Pipe! As the pictures reflect, this Big Freehand is in PRISTINE CONDITION ! The STRONG NOMENCLATURE looks "like new!" This no doubt results in part from storage in the ORIGINAL STANWELL SILK SLEEVE and ORIGINAL STANWELL BOX!!! Please note the it is an OLDER STYLE SILK SLEEVE that is completely COTTON-LINED!!! NO varnish, lacquer or shellac has been used to improve the pictures (and temporarily fill scratches and toothmarks) and NO coating has been applied to the inside of the Bowl to conceal cracks, heat fissures or even burnouts! The Pipe shines as it did when it left the factory in Denmark! This Large "Horn" is 6" LONG with a bowl 2 1/2" TALL and almost 1 3/4" WIDE (from front to back)!!!
